To allow for future updates and enhancements to your product, Global Village designed your Global Village 56K PC Card modem with firmware that can be updated.
The term "firmware" refers to the software in the modem's read-only memory (ROM). By updating the firmware, you can quickly and easily improve the operation and functionality of your modem without changing its hardware components.
This Read Me file provides information about updating the firmware for your Global Village 56K PC Card modem. It contains information about the following subjects:
• What's new in this version of the firmware?
• Who should use this updater?
• Updating the firmware
• Do I need a new script?
• I can't connect anymore!
I. What's new in this version of the firmware?
This updater includes the latest version of V.90 ITU 56K standard-compliant firmware, version 2.200 of V.90 firmware for all Global Village 56K PC Card modems and 56K modem/Ethernet cards.
This version provides a greater range of connectivity and interoperability when calling various types and brands of Internet Service Provider (ISP) access equipment.
II. Who should use this updater?
Use this updater only if you have a Global Village 56K PC Card modem or Global Village 56K modem/Ethernet card that is for US/Canada or is CE-Marked. The modems are identified by model number A959 or A956 on the back of the PC Card. Only users of those modems should use this updater: damage to your modem may occur if you attempt to use this updater on any other modem.
The firmware updater automatically checks that you have the correct modem hardware before updating the firmware.
Note: This updater will not work on the internal K56flex modems bundled with Apple G3 computers and PowerBook G3 Series laptops. Apple provides technical support and possible updates for your modem.
III. Updating the firmware
Before launching the updater program, quit all applications, including communications programs that may be using the modem.
Warning: While the modem is being updated, do not turn off the computer or disconnect the computer from the modem. Interrupting the update process can leave your modem unusable. Do not run this update while on battery power – plug in the computer's AC power and disable any power management settings.
If the update process is interrupted and the modem no longer responds to the firmware updater, communications software, or fax software, contact the Global Village Customer Satisfaction department; a representative will arrange for a replacement modem.
To update the modem firmware:
Copy the updater application to your hard drive: do NOT run the updater from a floppy disk. Double click the updater icon. A dialog will appear asking you to select the port to which your modem is connected. Select the appropriate port (this will be the name of your PC Card) and click Continue.
If you are running any AppleTalk services, an alert box appears telling you that another application, such as File Sharing, is using AppleTalk. At this point, you can either quit the application to unmount any servers or proceed.
Click the OK button to begin the update process.
A progress dialog box appears. The progress indicator fills up, pauses for several seconds, and then continues. This is normal.
When the update process is complete, a dialog box appears indicating that you have successfully updated your modem.
IV. Do I need a new script?
The new firmware does not change the initialization AT commands for the modem. You do not need to change your OT/PPP, Remote Access, FreePPP, or other communications software setups.
However, if you are experiencing the message "Communicating at an Unknown Rate" with OT/PPP, you will need to install and select the "GV flex/V.90 ARA 2.1/3.0/OT-PPP" script contained in this updater package. Place the script into your Modem Scripts folder located in your Extensions folder (in the System Folder) then select the script from the Modem control panel.
V. I can't connect anymore!
If you have a Global Village 56K PC Card modem that had not previously been upgraded to V.90, then your ISP probably does not support V.90. You should download the PC_Card_K56_ROM_Update3 from the Global Village website and "backflash" the modem to K56flex. The Read Me accompanying that updater will instruct on its use.
Note: the PC_Card_K56_ROM_Update3 does not apply to the Global Village V.90 PC Card, identified by that name on the front of the card.
